Savoring the Sweet Sunshine of Summer

Summer isn’t over yet! We’re soaking up the sunshine, enjoying seasonal flavors, and checking in on what’s happening with this year’s pecan crop.

August is here, but thankfully, summer isn't over yet—especially here in the South. One of the things I love about living along the Gulf Coast is that we get to enjoy summer a little longer. There are still plenty of warm, sunny days ahead for backyard cookouts, trips to the beach, afternoons on the water, and evenings outside with family and friends. Fall will be here before we know it, so I'm happy to soak up these summer days a little longer.

We're not the only ones making the most of all that sunshine. The pecan trees are pretty busy this time of year, too.

What's happening with the pecans right now? I think it's easy to forget just how much happens to a pecan before it ever makes its way into one of our bags, candies, or gift boxes.

By August, the pecans growing on the trees have already come a long way. Inside those green outer husks, the shells are hardening and the kernels are beginning to fill out. Sunshine, healthy leaves, and plenty of moisture are especially important right now as the trees continue putting their energy into this year's crop.

There's still some growing to do before harvest. Over the next several weeks, the kernels will continue to develop and mature. As we get closer to fall, the green husks will eventually begin to split open, letting us know harvest season is on its way.

So while we're soaking up the last stretch of summer, the pecan trees are quietly getting ready for one of our favorite times of year.

All this talk about sunshine seems especially fitting because we've been celebrating our Sweet Sunshine Flavors of Summer here at Renfroe.

Renfroe Tropical Flavored Pecans in Key Lime, Florida Orange and Pina Colada

If you're not quite ready for pumpkin spice and fall flavors—and I'm definitely not rushing them—this is a fun way to hang onto summer a little longer.

Our Pina Colada Pecans bring together pineapple and coconut for a taste that instantly feels tropical. Florida Orange Pecans are bright and citrusy, while our Key Lime Pecans have that perfect little mix of sweet and tart.

Looking for something to make for one of those last summer get-togethers? Our Southern Ambrosia Salad is a fun one to try. It's cool, fruity, and easy to share—just the kind of recipe that still feels like summer.

Of course, August also means back-to-school time for many families. As schedules get busier, it’s always nice to have a few easy snacks on hand, so take a peek at some of our favorite back-to-school snack ideas featuring Renfroe pecans.

Let's enjoy it while we can. Before long, the days will start getting shorter, fall will arrive, and we'll be talking about pecan harvest, holiday gifts, and all the wonderful things that come with the next season.

But not quite yet.

For now, I'm enjoying the sunshine, the warm evenings, time spent outside with family and friends—and maybe a few tropical pecans along the way.

I hope you'll do the same.

Here's to enjoying every last sweet, sunny bit of summer while we can!
